Final Inquiry Reflection

I can’t believe its the end of semester it went by so fast. During this semester I chose to do baking as my free inquiry project. I made so many yummy treats throughout the semester that I would love to make again.

I really liked this type of project because I probably would not have been baking every week without it. It was also something I really wanted to learn and I was motivated to do it.

Here are my two favourite baked goods I made:

Overall, I cant wait to try some new recipes and keep up with my baking this year!

Chocolate Chip Oat Cookies!

This week I made chocolate chip oat cookies!

To start I went to thrifty’s and grabbed all of my ingredients.

Then I mixed the sugar and butter together!

Then I mixed all the dry ingredients in a seperate bowl.

After both of those were mixed I added the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients!

After that I put small rolls of cookie dough on to a cookie sheet and put them into the oven.

Finished Product

Overall, these were super fun and easy to make. They were a perfect grab and go snack for before school or work.

Improvements I would make for next time

  • Cook it for less time (I found it difficult to know when they were done because they harden a lot outside of the oven)
  • Use an electric mixer when mixing the ingredients

Additional resources I found for next time

Chocolate Chip Oat Cookie Recipe

For next weeks recipe I will be making chocolate chip oat cookies! I am very excited to make these because they will be great for bringing to school for a snack!  This is the recipe I will be making https://preppykitchen.com/oatmeal-chocolate-chip-cookies/

The reason I picked this recipe is because it had great reviews and I liked how it is digitally accessible for everyone because of the photos it adds. This can help people who maybe struggle to read visualize the recipe and follow along that way

My goals for this recipe are

  • Learning how to tell when cookies are done
  • Making sure I make the cookies a good size

Making Pretzels!

This week I made soft pretzels with a cream cheese dip.

To start I made a pretzel dough which was not to difficult and required few ingredients. I then let it rise for about an hour until I could start shaping the pretzels.

Yeast Mixture

Dough Before Rising

Once the dough had risen I started shaping. This took a lot of time and some pretzels did not look perfect. It was harder than I thought but I looked at online tutorials and did my best.

After the pretzels were shaped I dunked them in boiling water with baking soda for about 10 seconds then transferred them onto a baking sheet and sprinkled some salt.

Then I put them into the oven and made the cream cheese dip while I waited for them to brown!

Finished Product

Overall, these were so yummy and an inexpensive snack. I gave some to my roommates and everyone enjoyed them.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

This week I tried out my first recipe; chocolate covered strawberries. This turned out better than I thought! To start I had to go to the grocery store! I bought local strawberries and chocolate chips. I washed and dried my strawberries because otherwise the chocolate wouldn’t stick. Then I melted the chocolate in the microwave at 15 second increments until it was fully melted. After that I added a couple chocolate chips to it to temper the chocolate. This process makes the chocolate shiny and more appealing. Then I coated my strawberries and placed them on a plate with parchment and into the fridge for a couple of hours until they fully hardened.

Fresh Local Strawberries

Rating 10/10 – these were so delicious and tasted so fresh with the local strawberries (they were also smaller strawberries which I found made them easier to eat)

Difficulty 8/10 – this recipe was not too difficult, and I think anyone could make these!

One improvement I would make next time is using a toothpick or something to stick in the strawberries to help me dip them. I found the stems/ leaves would break off and make it difficult. As well I learned you should eat them the day of because I had a couple the day after, and the strawberries can get a little soggy.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Recipe

My favorite fruit has always been strawberries! I love strawberries on my pancakes, strawberry jam, strawberry ice-cream, anything that involves strawberries. For my first baking item I have decided to make chocolate covered strawberries. This will be a good start to my baking journey as it is simple and will help me figure out reading new recipes.

The recipe I plan to use:

My goals for this recipe

  • Learning how to melt chocolate without it burning
  • Reading the recipe concisely

Inquiry Project Sept 16

For my inquiry project I would like to learn how to bake. As a kid before Christmas, I would always help my mom make cookies, tarts, and pie although she did most of the work, I just got the bowl at the end. I always feel like I am so busy and do not have enough time to bake. So, I am hoping by having this as my inquiry project I can try out new recipes and hopefully make some delicious treats!

My plan is to find a recipe one week and post it to my blog. For the next week I will complete the recipe and rate it on taste and difficultly.
